With film it helps to have a boom mic so you can record sound sparely from the camera, that way when it comes to editing you get a clear sound from the actors voice or sound effect then what you would get from the a camera.
This is something I mention in my talk about the film Envelope of love that I wrote and filmed. In that I explains about the audio.

When it comes to podcast or the radio you don't really need a boom mic to record, what I used was the mic on my headphone which worked as well it sounded clear when i held it closer to me, or you can use a microphone that connect's to a recorder and stand to hold the mic on cause if you're holding it you might move and it could mess with the sound of voice, like when it's near to you and then it moves away you going to sound both and quite.

Another is when you link both the camera audio and the recorded audio together

For my original 90 second news report on the warrens occult museum I used Premiere Pro which for Audio help's when it come to the volume's, because I had recorded what I was going to say twice because when editing it I knows mistakes and speech that was a bit hard to understand, you could tell that I had done to recording twice because one part of the speech was loud and clear where as the other was more quiet. So using the volume on I could improve it a bit by making the quiet parts louder, as long as it doesn't go pass the red line.
I can control the volume of the music so that when I hear myself speak I can figure out what needs to sound louder or lower.
