For my FMP have I have decided to do both publishing and moving image. For publishing, I have written a book called 'Polly'. For Moving Image, I have made a book trailer for my book. Originally I was planning on just writing a book but when we were told we had to relate it to the course you want to do in September (moving image or publishing) I had to then add moving image as well, which is why I am making a book trailer to go with my book. The theme for both projects is paranormal, the genre is Horror/thriller it all involves hauntings, possession, demons, exorcism, ghost hunters and death. My reasons for having it themed paranormal is because it is something I find easy to write about, it's something I know about and won't mind doing research on. It's also easier because, for most of it, you can use your imagination to create how you want the apartment to be haunted.
5 strengths
1. Coming up with a story; For me when I have a theme and something or someone to base it on I find it easy to come up with a story idea like the one for my FMP.
2. Coming up with a book cover design; Even though I ended up using the design I made for the back cover. With the sketchbook, I had in my mind of what I wanted for the cover it was just drawing it down onto paper. It wasn't that difficult and it was easy to do.
3. Coming up with a trailer plan; I think when it came to what I was limited to like, no one to act in it, so I had to think of the main things in my book that I can use to put into the trailer like my doll. So I mainly based it on her and I think the trailer looks good.
4. Music and sound effects; When it came to finding the right music piece for the trailer I find it easy to pick out what piece would sound great with the trailer, plus with getting good feedback about the music piece that also helps. With the sound effect, I'll admit it was hard trying to put in words on what kind of sound I wanted but I did find goods sound effect, not quite what I had in mind but it sounded good and it went great with the scene I sync it with.
5. The photo shoot; How everything was arranged looked great, how everything was placed I think looked good because it wasn't all levelled so I think it made it look better than what it would have looked like if everything was all places on the floor.
5 weaknesses:
1. Knowing the pixels for images; Because I was having trouble on the day of doing my photoshop and my camera's memory card missing. I ended up using my phone thinking it would be alright obviously it wasn't, so I had to re-take the photos again and it also wasted my time when I was editing the old photos for my front and back cover.
2. Using InDesign; Even though I was already planning on using it, I wasn't using it right for my book so I ended up having some help and learning how to copy and paste all my chapters onto InDesign quick and easy.
3. Filming the trailer; I think that when it came to actually filming I didn't think about the background or the brightness. Because I was mainly focused on getting different camera shots I should have thought about how to not see the background, because I think the background ruined it for the first trailer. Whereas with the second I had some help with ways to making the room darker and keeping a close shot on Polly.
4. Making the trailer understandable; Feedback I got for my first trailer was that it was hard to understand what the book was about and again because of the equipment in the background some even though it had something to do with the story. This is also why I added the summary to the second trailer was to help make it more understanding on what the book is about.
5. Coming up with a summary, Even though I have a summary it did take a while on what I should write and even now I think it could have been written differently maybe better.
What was the main idea from the theme? Can you describe it? Can you reference any influences here? (artists, directors, animators, brands etc.)
The main idea for my FMP was my Doll, Polly. She was the main focus on when coming up with a story, it needed to somehow have her as a doll that is possessed by a demon, with this idea it also had to be related to a haunted house or apartment. They were the main focus the rest was just added on when I started to think of the chapters.
Influences I would say is Paige McKenzie, she is a YouTuber best known as Sunshine from The haunting of Sunshine girl she is also an author, The haunting of Sunshine girl, book series.
Her show it's based on her house which is haunted by ghost and demon, but then finds out it's because of her and what she is that ghost and demon are attached to her. I think because of her haunted house is what gives me ideas on different hauntings I can do and being that she is the only author I know who's written a book about paranormal and that I have read show that there are others who read or writes about paranormal.
What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your development?
Experiments I did was my photos for the book covers. After the first images failed, I did another photo shoot with my camera, What I did was change the setting by giving me different colours and the brightness to see what I could get, but at the end didn't like any of them. I with the front cover of just Polly I tried to add the demon mask into the shoot but it just didn't look right I wasn't that much of a fan. I did get the right picture for my front cover, but only by accident since the camera was being slow.
Another experiment I did was with my story when I was trying to come with a story for my FMP it first started with having a family move into a new house, with a dark past and that the mother finds Polly in one of their moving boxes and gives it to her daughter. I then decided to change it when I couldn't think of anything for some of the chapters. I then went with a group of friends, on Halloween plays with an ouija but something goes wrong and a demon goes into Polly that one of the girls brought from a charity shop that same day. This idea I like but I still wasn't sure. I then found an old story I had started and was thinking whether to use that but Polly wouldn't be able to be in that story, so I didn't bother and stayed with the other story. After a few changes, I got the story I just wrote.
Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what comparisons/difference can you identify?
Just want to say I have never heard of her until now and have never seen this book cover before.
This book, Annabelle is a fiction - horror. My book is also a horror.
The author, Ruby Jean Jensen, all her book are paranormal and horror, which is what I like to write about.
On the books, similar's are that they both have a dark background and a doll in the centre. Another is the title both are a name, which is also a difference since mine is called Polly and hers is Annabelle.
Our names are in different places, her's is below the title whilst mine is at the bottom of the page below the picture of Polly.
Also with her image of, I think is Annabelle is that she has a noose wrapped around her neck, which is a bit creepy, whereas mine just has the blur effect, which I think is equally creepy.
I do think her font and colour she used for the title looks better and spookier then mine.

This is the back covers for both hers and my book. The similar is that we both have the summary on the back.
The differences are that I have an image whereas her is covered with the summary, the word in large 'Annabelle' and the barcode code and the background is plain black. I also notice that her summary is placed in the middle whereas mine is placed on the left
One similar is the pink writing, which is the same colour I used for Polly's name because it goes with Polly's dress.
It is weird seeing the similar in our front cover with the dark background, the doll in the centre and the title is also a name. The title is really not that weird since I'm sure there are other authors who's used names as a title, but just the doll and the background, and I've never seen nor heard this book before so I didn't copy it.
What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to help you with this
I think the key areas was getting my story all written up I think that was one key development because without the story I wouldn't have had the book, It was also that I had planned on getting it all written up in the easter holiday but getting it done on the last day before the easter holidays started.

Another key development was my book covers, without them again there would have been no book or a book with not cover but just a title and a summary. Because of the first one's not being usable I had to re-do the shoot which did cost time, especially when I wanted time editing the first two. But because I already knew what I needed to do so it didn't take me that long to re-do the edits like the brightness.

Pictures of the actually covers on my book
They are both very different from what I originally had and what I did the second time. You can see some of the objects have been placed on a different side or not laid out like before.
For my trailer, I think when I made the first trailer and placed it in the questionnaire that was a development because it got to the point where I could get feedback and find ways to making my next one even better so that was a key development in ways to make something better.

What was it like when you showed your product to friends and peers - how did that make you feel?
With my 1st trailer, I only showed it to my mum and nan. My mum said it was good and she jumped a bit when end scene came with the hand coming down onto the doll along with the sound effect sync to that scene. That made me happy because of she hard to scary so that even thought it was a small jump I still scared her which I wanted. When my nan saw it she said that it looked creepy with the music in the background, she also jumped at the same scene, She's easier to scare. She called me a weird person, which made me happy because it made them jump and it was different. With the book, my mum was with me when I opened the package. I was very happy when I saw them, they were thinner than what I thought they would be but they came out great. My mum said they looked really good and that the inside looked good as well. Even my dad said my book looked good, which made me happy.
The final trailer I've shown my mum and she really liked it, she liked it better then the first one because the fact it was more darker.
She also liked this scene, because of the writing and the muisc in the bckground.

The trailer also made her jump when it came to the mask coming into the scene. I'm glad that this one looks better and that she thinks it looks good.
What could you change about the work produced to improve and develop it?
I think one I would have tried to change would be my book trailer. I think that could have been improved maybe by telling the story in another way maybe having as women who're putting together the ritual which I think might give people an idea that it was somehow based on paranormal or horror. Maybe I should have come up with more ideas instead of doing the first one I came up with.
I think maybe my book cover could have looked different maybe I could have thought of another design when I had to do another photo shoot or maybe for the back I could have tried to do what I originally decided to do which was to add a wooden floor and draw part of a pentagram onto it.

Review your statement of intent - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage to complete everything you set out to?
Looking back at my statement of intent I can see that I have completed everything I wanted to do. The only change is that I would have to add was Screencast since I didn't put that down nor realised I would be using it. Another was photoshop which I put down to use for my book cover, I didn't use at the end and just kept with using lightroom.

Reflect on your pitch to the client; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or worse than you expected? what was the feedback from the client/lecturer? what do you think you could improve next time?
My pitch was talking about what I was doing which was Moving image and Publishing and that the project was writing a book and creating a book trailer. I made one slide based on publishing (book) which involved the theme and genre, chapter's character and deadline I had for myself. There was also another slide with both the book covers front and back. There was a slide with the research I did for the book and trailer, Like the website, I would be using for to print my book along with the size of the book. Research for my story and the name of the demon I was using Belial. The last side was for the book trailer which had the sketch, the deadline, main focus and the props I'll be using. Doing the pitch I was very nervous, thought it was only Steve and Ed I was still nervous, But once I started talking and doing the pitch it wasn't as bad. I was very happy when it came to an end and all was left was for them to give me feedback. I think it went well I was worry about not knowing what to say but once I started talking it was easier and seeing the slides made it easier to talk and not forget about what to say. My feedbacks were that my book front cover could be improved (that was the one that didn't have the blur effect) and there was some worry about the amount of time I had to write my story since I had 12 chapters to write. I think next time for ways on improvement I could have maybe talked a bit more about the trailer.
